Background

Located in the Arts District of Downtown Los Angeles, this installation contains 140 bespoke metal panels with 2,080 custom metal disks containing an LED. Each disk rests against a spring, waving in the wind. The LEDs can be uniquely controlled to create an endless amount of patterns. Together, the waving of the discs pairs with the patterns of the LEDs to create an organic illusion like that of a river or clouds.

Design & Development

After working through the initial design concepts, a bulk of the development revolved around detailing all of the elements in this build. (Almost) everything was a custom fabrication - which involved countless iterations and several prototypes to ensure everything fit together just right.

Fabrication & Installation

Being that this project was an entirely bespoke assembly, an interesting challenge that presented itself was the communication of this assembly. In order to tackle this, I generated a thorough install directive which included drawings and specs, as well as instructional diagrams and a kit of parts for easy identification.
